QuestionThis year my roses seem to have weak flower stems. The canes are fine but it almost seems as if the blossom is to heavy for the stem...hence when blossom opens they blossom droops. ideas, suggestions and/or remedies would be appreciated
AnswerThe two main reasons a rose will have weak stems are lack of Potassium (K) or potash ( third number on a fertilizer package) which encourages vigorous growth. Lack of it will sometimes produce yellow leaf margins which turn brown, weak stems and poorly developed buds. Also not enough sunshine will also cause weak stems. Another reason is that the stems may have a cane borer in them so check and see if there are any marks that would indicate they are there. The last reason is that some roses always have weak stems but if yours did okay last year then that is not the problem. Also you might check at the base of the flower buds to see if there is a very tiny pin hole as there could be a rose midge problem however it wouldn't cause weak stems. Check your roses and then please get back to me on what you find.
