QuestionPlanted roses in June & there were lots of flowers. Now flowers are few & the leaves have holes & number of holes in leaves are spreading to all 10 of the plants. Area is Orange County. They do not get full sun- morning & after 3 in the afternoon.
AnswerThe lack of flowers is normal at this time of year. A rose blooms the best in the spring and then has to wait and make flower buds to bloom again. Basically a rose has two main flushes with a few scattered flowers in between. The holes are not normal and are caused by some sort of insect that is eating the leaves. If the holes are jagged, then it is probably a beetle type bug that is doing the damage. But if the holes are round or have smooth edges then it will be caterpillars. Both can be got rid of with a spray such as Orthos Rose Pride or any spray that is for bitting insects.
