QuestionI received a Jackson and Perkins Lovestruck rose bush as a gift. It has been blooming well here in central/coastal New Jersey since planted in late May. However, the leaves now have oval holes and white/silver-gray spots. I'd really like to know what this is and how to treat it. I have been gardening for most of my life but this is my first rose bush. Thank you.
AnswerYour roses has got the Rose Slug which eats the leaves from underneath leaving only the top layer of the leaves which dries out and gives a transparent look to the top of the leaves.
If you look under the leaves then you should see a small gooey looking dark, sluglike insect. They really don't stay for long and if you can put up with the blemishes on the leaves, they it is best to simply ignore it. However if you want to use a spray then Orthos Rose Pride will solve the problem if the bugs are still there.
