QuestionI neglected my roses this year and did not spray for aphids or even remove the dead blooms. The bushes look horrible - no flowers and the leaves have holes in them. My seven sisters (I think that's the name) doesn't even have leaves. Is there anything I can do so that the bushes are not so unattractive in my garden?
AnswerIf a rose doesn't have leaves, it is usually because it didn't get enough water or it is dead. I would cut a tiny piece of cane off your Seven Sisters and see if it is either green or brown, as that is a really hard rose to kill. Then I would cut out dead or diseased canes and cut the whole climber back by about a third. This will activate it into new , healthy growth. Then I would take a couple of handfuls of any rose fertilizer and sprinkle it all around the base. Finally I would water it extremely well with a hose all around the base. I would do this type of watering for about five days.
Now for the rose bushes. Again cut out any dead or what looks diseased and then cut them back also by a third. This will make them start to grow nice healthy foliage and flower. Give them a handful of rose fertilizer and water very well, again about 5 days to make sure they the soil is not bone dry. I would assume by now that even though there are holes in the leaves, the insects have gone, but look closely anyway and see if you can find any. If you do and there are many, try spraying with Orthos Rose Pride. It will take around 3 weeks for you to see any flower buds and about a month for the buds to flower.
