Problems with roses

Question
I have about 10rose bushes around the house. This year, each of these bushes have very tiny and less than usual amount of leaves. color is green. They have not been blooming yet (neighbors' bushes have blooms. I have had these bushes for several years. This spring, we removed old mulch (cedar chips) and replaced with hard wood shredded mulch. Could this be causing the problem?

Answer
Cedar is not a wise choice for a rose bush mulch as the rose roots don't like the oil in the cedar. I think your roses are re-acting to the cedar mulch. Prune the roses back a little to encourage new healthy growth and water extra long to try and get rid of the oil that was left by the cedar. It may take until next year for the roses to bounce back but they will and bloom for you.
