moving newly planted rose

Question
I live in upstate New York, near Binghamton or Watkins Glen.  I planted a rose about a month ago in a spot that I thought was perfect.  Unfortunately my kids have a portable basketball hoop in the driveway and the basketball often rolls or bounces into the rose! It has had about 2 broken branches so far and it's not very big to start with.  I need to move it to a safer location but I really know nothing about plants, I just plant them and pray! Will all this breakage kill it?  When and how do I go about moving it since it's so new?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Just view the breakage as bad pruning. Move the rose to where you want it( preferably in the evening) but cut it down to where the canes were broken. You can go down to even three inches and a rose will bounce back. You need to prune it hard as the wound from the broken canes can get disease in it such as canker and then you will loose the rose bush. So replant it but just make sure you water it faithfully every day as it will be under stress. It will come back but you probably won't see any new growth for a couple of weeks time. That will be the time to give it some rose fertilizer. Not before as the roots won't be able to use it until they get settles in.
