Questionanniversary rose pruned started to grow then a cold spell leaves went dead whole rose tree now looks as if it has died.Has two swellings one near the top the other near the bottom, not sure if they were there when we brought it.scrape bark still green underneath.
AnswerThere shouldn't be any swellings on the rose canes as they could be rose galls. Rose galls are an infection and contain bacteria which stunts the rose growth and generally causes problems in regards to vigour. They look like a brown, corky type of lump. However they could be the bud unions as the tree is made by grafting a modern rose on top of a Rugosa.
And the canes should be growing out from this lump under the top growth. Cut one of the canes and see if it is green all the way through . If it is green but has brown in the center then the rose is dead.
