QuestionHello,
I am in Zone 9 and have recently planted some bare root David Austin roses. They are growing well, but 2 of the plants that are planted in quick draining rocky soil have a strange problem. Some of the rose buds are falling off the stalk. Its asthough something has bit it and the bud discolours to slight yellow to brown and falls off. I do not see any insects, the lady bugs have taken care of most of them, and the leaves look healithy and beautiful. I just have to brush the buds and the fall off, conmpletely formed. Do you have any idea?
I appreciate you assistance!
Celeste
AnswerThere is a tiny insect called a Rose midge and they lay their eggs at the base of newly formed small flower buds. When the eggs hatch they insect eats the buds and so destroys it. You should be able to see a tiny pin hole at the base of the buds. The other reason why buds fall off is not enough water. Dig down around the base of the rose to make sure the water is getting down to at least inches preferably more. Many times when you water you are sure the water goes deeper than it does. Sometimes the water goes along under the top of the soil and not down deep.
