Replanting a climbing rose bush

Question
I have a climbing rose bush that I would like to move.  It is planted next to my deck since the house was built and that was approximately 10 years ago.  I would like to move it to the south side of my house which gets great sunlight all during the day.  Can you tell me how to do this and if I can without killing it.

Answer
Roses can only be successfully moved when they are dormant and that is in the early spring or late fall. Any other time means you take the chance of killing them as roses hate to be disturbed. Better to wait until late this fall, cut the climber back to about 4 feet, replant right away and then water well to keep the soil damp. Even if the rose looks sad just keep watering as in time it will perk up and start making new growth. If you get a very cold winter then mound up all around the base of the climber with about 12 inches of soil, compost or mulch to protect the roots. Next spring continue to water well until you see new growth coming along.
