QuestionI live just west of Milwaukee, WI. We purchased three of these roses last
summer, planted them along a deck 3 feet apart from one another and after
going through the winter, one of them has begun getting shoots but the
other two have not. When I look at the base of the 2 I can see green stems,
but nothing that looks like new shoots. The location of the three provides the
most sun as it begins to move north to the one that is growing versus the
other two. Should I give the two another couple weeks before I assume they
are dead? Thanks
AnswerIt sounds like your Knock Out got nipped by the winter. I would prune them back to about 12 inches to get rid of any dead and dying growth. I think you will see new growth coming from those green canes. Pruning helps the roots as they don't have to contend with the dead growth and will concentrate on pushing out tall, vigorous new canes. When roses get a hit from the winter cold, it always puts them into a spring stress and so they take a longer time to get going. I agree with you I would after pruning give them a couple of more weeks to expect growth.
