QuestionI live in Dallas/Fort Worth, and I've never grown roses before. I wanted to try out a Don Juan, I read that they're pretty good for first-timers. I have a spot on the southeast corner of my east-facing house that would be lovely, but I'm concerned about sun. It gets a few hours of filtered sun in the morning, due to my neighbor's tree, and then about 4 to 4.5 hours of full sun. Will this sort of even out to the "6 full hours" that all roses apparently require? Especially considering how harsh the heat and sun are in TX, a little filtering seems to be a good thing for most plants around here. But do roses need that blistering sun anyway?
AnswerDon Juan is a beautiful red rose with a good fragrance so it should do well for you in your area. You are right in that two hours of sun in your area is the same as 4 hours of sun in Seattle. I am sure that Don Juan would do much better in some shade so the edges of the petals don't burn or even turn purple in the hot sun. Roses really aren't hot sun lovers because they hate hot roots so the ideal situation for a rose is all morning sun, then shade in the mid to hot afternoon sun and finally full late day sun. I am talking about the perfect garden of course!
