QuestionWhen I was a boy (1940's) my mother bought me a rose bush that had my
same name, "Rex". I recall it being dark red, with big blooms. I have seen
them in stores occasionally with that same name tag. I grew up in western
Washington (southwest, actually; Pacific County) I have been trying to find
one to plant in my new midwest location, (Muncie IN) but can't find any
reference to that name in my internet search. Is this variety too old to still be
available? I have seen the pinkish "Sexy Rexy" which is not it, and I think too
recent. I am not very expert on roses or internet searches - thought you
might have heard of it.
Thanks,
Rex T.
AnswerThere are over a couple of hundred roses introduced in the world every year and many of them don't stay on the market very long. Also the problem with names is that when it is introduced in another country it is called one name and then when it is introduced in the States, the name is changed. This makes for a lot of confusion. I have looked up the name Rex on all the rose data bases and there is no rose by that name.I even checked the roses that were introduced around 1940 and agin no luck. If it was around in the 1940s I am sure it will not be in the nurseries now.
