QuestionI live in zone 5 (Boston area) and just bought 3 of the
Brownell sub-zero roses. When can they be put into the
ground and how should I maintain them until that time?

AnswerBrownell roses are hardy but when you first plant them it would be best to wait until there is no danger of a nasty three days of frost nipping them. You are just about out of the danger zone so I would place them in an unheated area.In a perfect world you would cover them with soil in a pot but if that isn't possible, wrap them in lots of damp newspaper leaving about 3 inches of the canes sticking out of the top. Finally wrap them in a garbage bag and tie tight just under the 3 inch of the top canes. Then place them upright in a pot or anything that keep the canes upright in case they start to bud out and the new buds won't be damaged. Brownell roses can take frost so don't worry if when you plant them they get a frosting as you will have planted the bud union or the base of the canes, about 4 inches below the soil.
