potted roses

Question
I live in central NJ (zone 7?)and would like to try potting a rose on my patio this summer. I love climbing roses, but do not know if they are suited to my zone. I would also prefer something that continues to bloom throughout the summer. Pot size is not an issue- I can use any.

Answer
Climbing roses will grow well for you in your zone but on a patio they can get too large. Climbers tend to throw up tall, thick canes and then produce blooms which are towards the top. There is a classification called mini climbers which would get to about 5 feet tall. Amy rose nursery that carries mini roses would have a selection. A really good one is called  Jeanne La Joie which will grow very tall if you don't prune it. Pruning it will keep it down to about 6 feet. You could also grow any floribunda in an 18 inch deep pot. Hybrid teas would probably do better if the pot was larger, such as 24 inches deep. The reason that roses don't always do well in pots is because they hate hot roots. Roots which get overheated in a  pot, especially a ceramic one, will make the rose go under stress. But if you use a sturdy plastic one and use half bark mulch and half potting soil, the rose will do much better. All roses have basically two flushes but the floribundas always have some blooms on them.
