Please help??

Question
The beautiful cut roses I got for Valentine's day to be put in water have sprouted bushy leaves. It lives! Please tell me how to transplant these beauties in soil so I can grow them myself. They're 1 month old, no roots are on the bottom. I don't know where to go from here??  Help!

Answer
Because there are bacteria in soil, it is best to plant your roses in soil used for starting seeds as it is sterile. Bacteria in soil plug up the ends of the stems of the roses and so the roots won't start. Cut off the dead flowers and place the stems in the soil, pushing them down to about 3 inches. Then place a glass jar or  large pop bottle over them, taking it off for short periods during the day. Place the jar on a window but not in full hot sun. When you see a lot of growth growing, then take the bottle off permanently. Let the rose canes stay in the pot for at least a year. After taking the glass off you can give the roses liquid house plant fertilizer at half strength every month until the fall. Next spring replant into any soil in a 18 inch deep pot. These roses are tricky to grow so don't blame yourself if they don't make it.
