QuestionThe end of February is usually the beginning of Spring here in Florida. My climbing rose looks like it needs trimming. It was planted 2 years ago (now about 4-5 ft. tall). What are the big red berries(?) where the roses bloomed? Should all of these be removed as I trim. We're expecting 32 degrees this weekend. Should I wait longer before trimming?
AnswerClimbers really only need to be trimmed or cut back if they outgrow their allotted space so giving your rose a is a good idea. In you area now is a good time to prune your roses as cold temperatures won't bother them. The red berries are, as you said, where the flowers grew. Then after they have finished blooming and die, they make a seed case which is called a hip. I would cut these hips off when you prune the rose. Sometimes birds eat the hips, but birds seem to have certain likes and dislikes when it comes to eating rose hips.
