QuestionI have a rose I need id for or direction to find id. I know it is difficult without a pic of the bloom but I'll ask anyway. It is a small deep red bloom, about 1 " accross, on a "wild" climbing runners. It has bloomed all summer, last bloom around Thanksgiving. Hubby bought it form a lady on the side of the road selling from her truck. She identified it as a sweetheart rose. We have bought several plants from her that she did correctly identify, but I can't find it listed anywhere under that name. By the way it has grown it is definately invasive and hardy in zone 8, southern Alabama. All of her plants are heirloom varieties she propagates herself. Any ideas?
AnswerThe rose that is called the Sweetheart Rose, is a double pale pink rose that also goes under the other name of Cecile Brunner. So I think you can rule out that name for your rose. We can also rule out any native species as they are all white single ones. You are right in that without a photo it is impossible to ID the rose. However from your description of the rose, and if the flowers are double, it sounds a lot like a rambler. Ramblers grow by sending out long, thin flexible runners or thin canes. Also the colour is important in that red is used in rose classification to describe not only a real red but deep rose pink to deep purple pink. Try Googling for your rose this way.... Rambler "red wichurana" I am assuming it is double and a real red.
