Wild Cherokee Rose

Question
This plant grows wild in my area and is a nuisance.  How do I kill it?  It is taking over everything along my rural road.  I live in the Slidell, La. area not far from New Orleans

Answer
Nuisance is a polite word for this lovely, but very invasive pest. This rose spreads by small suckers and in some States is known as an invasive weed. I wish i could give you a simple fix to get rid of the rose but there isn't one and it will take time and effort. The reason that toxic sprays don't work too well is because they can't kill the suckers growing under the soil. So you have to dig it out making sure you don't even leave an inch of the roots. Then every time one of these tiny suckers pop up you either spray it with RoundUp or yank it out or even cut it off. RoundUp will only kill the top part as it becomes carbon when it hits the soil. A rose has to have leaves to survive and by constantly not allowing any leaves to see the light, it will slowly die. Easy to do in a garden setting but not along a roadside. I wonder if your department of Agriculture would have a better answer for you as it is considered a major pest to farmers and their grazing animals.
