Brown tipped leaves

Question
I am a novice rose care giver.  I have a nice potted bush that all of a sudden has brown tipped leaves on the older growth.  New growth does not exhibit any brown, yet.  I live in southern Calif where it has been very hot, but this does not look like leaf burn from sun and it is not in the afternoon sun.
I did fertilize the bush weeks ago and since then the brown leaves have appeared.  I thought the dose was very weak, but maybe not?????
It is in a big plastic pot.  This is probably more info than you need but I have no knowledge of roses.  This was a gift and I would feel so bad if I lost it.
Thanks,
K

Answer
High heat does put some roses under stress. Also fertilizing in temperatures over 80' will also cause roses to re-act and the re-action is usually in the leaves. They will either go soft and droop or the tips of the leaves will get burnt by the chemical salts in the fertilizer. If the rest of the rose bush is doing well then I would just water it well to try and help get the salts out of the roots.
