QuestionHi, you mentioned in my last post that alfalfa meal is good to put around the roses next spring. I assume that acts as a fertilizer? Should I use that along with another fertilizer, or singularly, and when should I do that? I read the first time they should be fertilized is after they start regrowing their leaves, but can I put it on along with the new mulch right after I uncover them (after the last frost)? Thanks again!
AnswerThere are many good reports coming from gardeners about alfalfa meal. It contains a natural root activator which gets the roses off to a good start in the spring. It does have a very small percentage of nitrogen in it but not enough for a rose bush. I would use any type of rose fertilizer in the spring with the alfalfa meal when you uncover your roses. I really think you will see a difference in the rose's growth.
