QuestionI planted my roses 6 months ago. They were blooming beautifully for one month only. I expected more flowers for longer period of time because the label said " blooming from summer to frost". What's wrong?
AnswerSelling roses is a big business and the competition is very strong. So to get gardeners interested in their product, some advertising just isn't true and flies in the face of logic. All roses have basically two bloom periods. They set flower buds in the spring and then bloom on them later. Afterwards they have to rest and set more flower buds on which they then have another flush of flowers. However while they are setting more flower buds on the new growth, there is always old growth that has a few buds on it and these will bloom while the bush is waiting for the next flush. This may give the impression of continuous blooming but it isn't. If your roses are climbers then they definitely will have just two main flushes. One really good one in the late spring and another not so generous in the summertime.
