QuestionHi Lynnette i had a great rose garden in idaho before i came here, 100's of various roses. Are you saying that only tea roses will grow here. How about Long stem roses, Purple Delights , Blue mums, tropicana, all long stem roses.
I especially like the rose hedges "Simplicity " i think they are called form J and P. Will they grow here at all. Frustrated rose grower.
Everything grows so well here, I have 90- orchids of various varieties and many others new to me here, but enjoy roses so much. want to grow here
for my best friend and wife.

AnswerI would think that most flowers and shrubs would grow well in the Philippines. The only drawback I can see ( unless you garden in the mountains) is that the climate does not give a rose plant any chance to go dormant. This means it constantly grows and all roses need even a short down period. Roses appear to be a huge industry in the Philippines but of course they are grown under glass. All rose books tend to advise that you fertilize your roses constantly. I think in a climate which is always nice and warm and the soil is good, I would tend to encourage the roses to grow slowly. That way you don't have lots of tender growth which only encourage pests and disease. Gardeners are known to push the limits and try new things so all I can say is try the roses you like and see what happens. Tea roses like a constant warm climate and do well resisting disease problems and don't mind warm roots. But because hybrid teas are so highly interbred, the faster they grow, the more problems you get and the hate warm roots. One small piece of advice I can give you is mulch the rose roots to keep them cool.
There are no rose nurseries in the Philippines on my Rose Nurseries data base. But large rose nurseries such as Peter Beales and David Austin in England, ship all over the world. Google their nurseries and send them an email about shipping to you. There are also other European nurseries that ship worldwide. It will be expensive but at least you will be able to get roses.
