Dying Rose Bushes

Question
My rose bushes have no leaves.  This spring they bloom and now all of the leaves are gone.  It looks as though something ate all of the leaves and just left the stems.  What leaves are left are spotted.  I live in the KC Missouri area.  It has been a very wet spring and now it is beginning to get hot and humid.  Not sure what is wrong with them or even what to do to.  Most of the rose bushes were here when I move here.  I am not sure what kind they are.

Answer
It sounds like your roses were hit with a fungal infection or a type of insect that ate the leaves. Even some animals will completely eat all the rose leaves in a day. The weather you describe is the worst type for a rose bush and this kind of spring and then a hot summer, causes a fungal disease called Black Spot. The leaves get dark brown spots on them and then die and turn yellow. Finally they fall off. Because roses can grow three sets of leaves, I would wait until the roses have got used to the hot and humid weather and then I think you will see them putting out new healthy leaves.
