old climbing roses

Question
My mother had a climbing rose bush and about a foot from the old base, a new clump came up.  I transplanted it and it looks like a short ground cover.  It is very healthy but I'm wondering if it will ever bloom.  The original bush is about 70 years old. Do you think this new growth will bloom
or is it just some sort of sucker.

Answer
Some roses bloom on last years wood. This means that they make a canes with bud eyes in them but they don't bloom until the following spring. This could be the reason your rose isn't blooming. Also a rose has to make growth and when the rose feels it has made enough to sustain making blooms then it will wait until the time is right. Even a sucker will bloom. I think the rose is just too immature to bloom.
