burnt outside petals

Question
My roses are blooming w/the outside petals looking burnt.  What causes this?  I live in zone 7 - the plants get approximately 6 -7 hours of morning sun.
Thank you for your assistance.
Laurie

Answer
If all your roses have burnt petals, then it may be a frost nipped them just before they opened. The other thing causing it may be thrips. These are very tiny little insects that suck on the petals. If it is then you will also see tiny brown dots on the petals too. The last is the rose midge which lays it's eggs at the base of the rose bud and when they hatch they start eating on the petals. They usually leave a tiny hole at the base of the rose bud. Any rose insecticide will get rid of the problem if it wasn't a cold snap.
