QuestionI have quite a few rose bushes and on a few of the bushes one or two buds tip to the side almost parallel to the stem. What causes this?
AnswerThere is a little insect called a Rose Midge and the mother bug makes a hole at the base of the rose bud and lays her eggs there. Then the midges hatch and feed on the bud causing the bud to lean over or to destroy the flowers or damage them. The another pest is called a rose weevil and they also do damage to the rose buds. Look for a tiny pin hole at the base of the buds. Any rose insecticide spray will cure the problem. There is a third possibility in that if after the buds are formed you get a cold frost, sometimes this will damage the buds and make the stems weak which causes the buds to bend over even if they are healthy.
