my climbing rose bush

Question
Last October I planted a climbing rose bush.  It was not very large and I didn't have the money at the time for a trellis, so I didn't put it on a trellis.  By now it has grown significantly and we were trying to train it to go up the trellis.  Are we in danger of harming the shoots, if we pull them slightly back to reach the trellis?  Should we tie the short shoots back to the trellis?  Any advice on adding a trellis late would be appreciated:)  Thanks

Answer
You tie on the main canes to the trellis bending them slightly lie a fan. Once you have these tied on, then take the long side shoots coming from these main ones and tie them to the trellis but not as tight as the main ones as this is where some of your flowers are going to come from not the main canes and you ant to see hem not squash them. Finally there should be smaller cans coming from these side ones. These are the canes you cut right back to 3 inches because they are going to flower every year. After these blooms are finished the just snap them off with your fingers.
