Questionmy roses produce beautiful blooms, but the canes have very few leaves, and look pretty naked. Some are hybrid teas and some are heirloom climbers. I the "Bayer" systemic and "Osmacote" every month. I live in NE Florida zone 8/9. Roses are in full sun, although facing west. They are root watered except for the rain. They are sprayed with a fungicide every 3/4 months.
They need pruning next winter, hard to tell here when they are dormant. What am I doing wrong?
AnswerI am a little concerned in regards to the Bayer Systemic spray. Using it monthly may not be wise. Usually you don't use an insecticide ( I am assuming it is an insecticide) so often as it can have an effect on a rose bush. The fungicide won't do any harm so that one is all right. Some roses do have only a few leaves but they shouldn't look naked. Try and hold off on the Bayer spray for this season and see what happens. Also Osmocote is what they call a slow release fertilizer and this means that it will let go of a little fertilizer every time you water. Usually it will last from 3 to 6 months. It should say on the package. You may be over fertilizing the roses. In regards to pruning I would do it around the end of February. Never mind if they are still growing, just prune them back at that time.
