QuestionHi, I have noticed on one of our rose trees that the bud is growing sideways. Do you know why this happens. I live in Northern California (East Bay Area)
AnswerI am a bit confused in regards to your question. Perhaps if I explain a rose tree if might help. Rose trees are made by growing a Rugosa rose and only letting one stem grow. When it has reached the height needed then they bud a modern rose on the top. So you have a straight stem with a beautiful modern rose bush on the top. These top rose canes will grow up or even out. In the spring you then prune them back to about 8 inches to keep the rose tree balanced and not top heavy. Sometimes the stem or Rugosa rose, starts to bud out but all you do is just rub the buds off with your fingers. Also don't let any canes come from the base as that will be also be the Rugosa not the modern one. Again simply yank them off. Don't cut them or you will get more canes, as cutting them is just like pruning and you want to kill the canes, not encourage them to grow. A long answer but I hope it solves your problem. If not get in touch again.
