QuestionI do have hybrid roses & I always thought the time to cut them back was after a hard frost/ pre winter. I live in Minnesota. In an answer I just read of yours for someone in New Mexico, you said to cut back after the cold is done, which would be spring. Im a bit confused. Which, for my climate, is correct?
AnswerWhen you garden in a mild climate you can take your choice on whether you wish to prune in the fall or the spring. As you don't want to encourage flowering during the cool winter then you usually prune very early in the spring. However in your area because your winters could kill a rose, then it is a wisdom to prune before the nasty cold weather sets in. Usually that means after you have had a couple of hard frosts then the rose will have gone completely dormant Covering up before can activate a rose into taking the sap up the canes which of course will freeze the rose and damaged it. Although the top of the rose looks like it is totally dormant, rose roots can continue to grow until the soil reaches around 38 degrees. Hope this helps.
