Re-starting roses

Question
Can you start a new plant using the parts you prune from a rose.  I don't know what kind they are, but they're kinda tall and then they branch out, but they're not bushy.  Thanks.

Answer
You might have a climbing rose.  And yes you can start plants by taking cuttings.  But hard wood cuttings are more difficult to make root.  You will need to take a good sized piece about 1ft.   Scrape 1-2" from the bottom of the cutting, down to the green fleshy layer. Dip this into Rootone w/ fungicide (they make a rootone with fungicide already in it), this is so it doesn't rot.  Then place that into a very light fluffy mixture of soil (a really good potting soil and then mix a bag of perlite with it) or use a seed starting mixture.  Make sure to put the whole 1-2" rootone piece, below the soil.  Keep this evenly moist and it should root.  You can also try to root it in water without rootone, but rootone stimulates roots to develop and is made for taking cuttings.  Also, if you want your rose bushes to be more bushy.  Prune them down to healthy buds in the Spring, below a five leaf, at a 45 degree angle away from the bud.  And make sure the bud you prune down to is an outward facing bud.  Are you wanting to take cuttings because you want a more bushy plant, or are you just wanting to propagate?  You might need to transplant the roses (if they are climber) to an area that they can climb.  Like a trellis or arch etc. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions, I am glad to help.
