Questionhello! I am a newbie rose owner, I just planted my first one this past spring(a miniature rose bush), I did bring it back from the brink of death , but now with winter coming I don't know how to prepare it!! I don't want it to die over winter I worked very hard to get it to the size and healthy stature it is at. Please help me figure out how to keep it alive so I can enjoy it again!! Thank You so much
AnswerIt all depends where you live on how to protect roses for winter. if you just get the usual winter with cold and snow, then I would take some soil or compost or anything type of mulch you have in your area, and mound the rose up to about 10 inches. That way should the winter cold be really nasty and the winds extremely cold, the rose will only dieback to 10 inches. As most roses will come back from 2 inches, you will have enough to start the bush again.
If your winters are bitterly cold, I would wait until the rose is completly dormant when all the leaves have fallen off, pot it up and bring it into a cold but not freezing area. Then every month give it just enough water to get the soil damp but not wet or it will rot. In the spring plant it back in the garden again. Prune it back by a third to encourage more new growth to start. Hope this helps.
