QuestionHello my American cousins! I have a rose bush tree
( standard rose ) which I think is called floribunda. Its flowers are yellow, quite small and very scented. However, the leaves seem to get attacked by something? After new leaf growth about 4-6 weeks they become quite 'skeletal' Only spots on the leaf not the whole leaf. Could you tell me is it likely to be an insect or fungus? and whats the solution. The rose is in a large container on a patio out the way of the elements. Climate is the north-east of England. cold winters, wet springs usually hottish summers but generally miserable ( ha, ha )and autumnal.
AnswerGreetingsto my British cousins from Canada! Welcome David to the world of the rose slugworm. This is a tiny sluglike creature which eats only the good stuff out of the leaves and leaves the bones. As it only eats under the rose leaves, it can be hard to get rid of. Sparying standing on one,s head is not an option. What you need it a systemic type of rose insect spray so that when the bug takes a bite it is poisoned and dies. Your climate sounds like the west coat of Canada and slug worms are quite happy in this type of climate. Hope this helps. Lynnette
