QuestionI live in Dayton, Ohio zone 5. I have 3 knockout roses in a bed. I would like to add some of the new colors in the same space, but I would need to move 2 of the existing plants. How and when should I do this? And if I have to wait until the plants are doemant, what should I do with the 4 new roses I just purchased?
AnswerRoses don't like to be disturbed at any time so it is best to move them when they are dormant. But Knockout roses are classified as modern shrubs which means they are tough. I would do it now trying to keep the root ball together. If you move them when it is cool and have the new hole ready and damp, there should be no problem. I would mound up the roses (all of them) with compost, soil, or whatever you have, just to make sure if you have a nasty winter they will be safe and won't die. An 8 inch mound should be fine. If however the weather gets really cold then wait until spring but dig a large hole for the new roses and lay them so that only the tips are above ground like on an angle. Then mound then roots up with some sort of mulch. That will keep them safe through a winter. Hope this helps.
