QuestionI live in IA and planted two Climbing Blaze this past summer. They have grown just beautiful, but I haven't gotten one flower on either. I planted a climbing yellow rose even later, and it has bloomed beautifully off and on. All the roses are getting plenty of sun, why won't these bloom. I purchased them from Spring Hills Nursery, and they arrived as just plain bare root. They have gotten to around 6 ft. with plenty of leaves, but no flowers all summer? Are they done for or is there something I can do?
AnswerYour Blaze roses are doing exactly what they should do. Climbers make new growth for a year or two at the expense of making flowers. Making blooms takes the most energy for a rose to do. Blaze and other climbers are known for this type of growth. Blaze makes flowers on last years growth and so should bloom next year. It appears that your yellow climber makes flowers on both this years wood as well as next years wood and so you get flowers quickly. Also not all climbers are the same. Some are bred as a climber and some are bushes that has suddenly become climbers. I wouldn't be concerned about Blaze as it gets high marks as a vey good climber. Hope this helps.
