Tea Rose tree

Question
I have a tea rose tree and on one side all the branches are dead(not producing leaves, flowers).  I want a cute little round rose tree but have no idea how to prune it with only one side.  Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Answer
Roses trees are made by growing a rugosa type rose and then taking off all the side shoots. When it has grown to the right height, they then graft the tea rose onto the top by making about three grafts around the top. If one of the grafts dies there is no way to replace it. However if you want to try and make it into a round shape that may be impossible. What I would do is place or plant it with the dead side to the back so you can't see it. Then I would let the top grow longer and shorten the sides so it makes a ball shape. Then in the middle of the summer I would prune it again a little to keep it as a ball shape. Pruning in the summer doesn't activate growth like the spring pruning does. The next spring prune it all back to about 8 inches leaving a few canes on the top longer. Hope this helps.
