QuestionI live in the midwest and planted some rose bushes this summer. They have really taken off but I am wondering if I need to trim them back this fall. They are quite leggy and I worry that the ice snow of winter will cause them to snap.
AnswerYou are right in that the snow could weigh on them and snap some of the canes. I wouldn't prune them back hard, just so that all the canes are the same height and then tie them up like a bundle if possible. However if you want them shorter then cut them back a bit more but always leave enough cane length in case there is some dieback in the winter. You can then prune them back in the spring to where you want them to be. Hope this helps.
