Roses not reblooming

Question
I have been growing roses for at least ten years and this year , for the first time, I have not had a significant rebloom of my roses. They bloomed beautifully in the beginning of the summer, but haven't bloomed much at all since then. All the roses in my garden are the reblooming type and this has never happened before. Could this be due to a few weeks of extremely hot weather we had here in Pittsburgh,PA ?  They have plenty of canes and leaves but no buds. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
This is a question that I have had many times this year. Roses do not like sudden heat spells and many people are getting them including me. What happens is that the heat shocks them and also can kill the tiny new buds. It doesn't take much energy for a rose to make new growth it is the setting of the buds and then blooming that takes the most energy. When you get a heat spell, the rose protects itself by shutting down and this means no flowers. This has not been a good year for the roses. It is nothing that you are doing, it is just the rose trying to save itself from dying. First the buds go, then the leaves finally the cans, that is how a rose saves itself in unique weather or stressful conditions. When the weather returns to normal they will also. Hope this helps.
