SWEET CORN

Question
QUESTION: I have a dwarf rose bush in a pot that is doing great, but I need to know what to do with it during the winter?  Do I leave it outside or bring it in the house?

ANSWER: In regards to overwintering a rose in a pot, it all depends how nasty your winter is. If you garden where the winter doesn't get snow then you can place it against the house or anywhere else to save it from the cold winds which may dry it out. If your winter has snow and gets cold then wait until the rose has dropped all it's leaves off and then place it in an unheated garage or basement. Bringing it in before leaf drop will only encourage new soft growth which won't survive over the winter and will probably rot. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: How do you keep earwigs of the corn?

Answer
I only answer questions about roses but because I live in an area where they do grow corn here is what a homeowner can do. Earwigs are best trapped and common types of traps are a rolled-up newspaper, corrugated cardboard, or short piece of hose. Place these traps on the soil near plants just before dark and shake accumulated earwigs out into a pail of soapy water in the morning. Continue these procedures every day until you are no longer catching earwigs.
