QuestionHi there.
I moved into my place 3 years ago. The first summer there was a lovely large rose bush (practically a tree) that had many blooms on it and was healthy. The condo corp cut it down (stating it was 'overgrown'). The rose has since re-grown itself, and some of the canes are close to 6' tall, although it is not as bushy on top as it was. My question is this...it has NOT bloomed for the last 2 summers! It was sooo beautiful before they chopped it off. What should I do? It gets lots of sun (mid-day).
Thanks
Miranda
AnswerWhen you cut a large healthy rose bush back severely, it has to start over again. This takes a lot of energy and usually it doesn't have any left over to make flowers. What you are seeing is new growth at the expense of blooming. Try giving it tomato fertilizer next spring (same rate as a mature tomato) plus lots of water. Then place a mulch of any kind all around the base as roses love cool roots. I would make sure you are the pruner the next time the condo corp wants to whack it back. Hope this helps.
