QuestionI'm from Vancouver, BC Zone 7 or 8. I had a Red Rose bush that died and the Wild Rose that it was attached too lived. The wild rose bush after it finishes blooming every year gets these mossy clump on it. Which contain white lavae worms inside them. I usally cut them all off, but I would like to know what they are? Thank you Alexandria
AnswerThe common name for this gall is Robin's Pin-Cushion which doesn't harm the rose at all. It is made by a gall wasp that lays it's eggs in late summer on mainly wild rose bushes. When the larvae hatch, and start to feed their salva creates a plant growth chemical which causes the ball like growth. The grubs inside feed on the plant through the winter and emerge in spring. Gall wasps are good for the garden as they feed on dead and decaying matter. Hope this helps.
