QuestionI have a climbing rose that I received in May 2006 that was about 12-18" high. I couldn't plant it until July because we were landscaping, so I stuck the pot in the ground and kept it watered. By July, it was almost 5' tall. I've only had it 14 months and I know you're not supposed to prune climbers for the first three years, but it's over 10 feet tall right now, and I've cut at least a foot or more off this summer. I might have last summer, as well, I can't remember. It's barely the end of July and we have at least 3 more months of growing season, here in El Paso, TX. Can I cut it back?? It's a monster and growing up over the top of my patio!
AnswerThere is too types of pruning. One is the main one that you do in the spring to shape and activate the rose into new growth. The other is done is the summer to keep the rose under control. So as you can see you can cut it back now to try and keep it where you want it. You can also bend the canes and place them where you want them. Bending the canes will give you many more flowers. Hope this helps.
