new rose plant

Question
New Jersey

I recently planted a rose bush 3/4 stalks (don't remember the species, but it was supposed to yield very large roses) and to date there has been no growth, 3 of the 4 stalks are brown and one is green and all have thorns.  Can you help or should I just throw it away?

Thanks.

Answer
When a rose is going down you can always try drastic measure before you throw it away. Cut out to the base all brown canes. Cut the green one down to 3 inches as roses can come back from one inch of cane. Sprinkle a handful of any rose fertilizer all around the base. Then place a 3 inch mulch of whatever kind you can get in your area such as bark mulch. Then water daily until it is thoroughly soaked. If there is any life left this will encourage it to grow back. If nothing happens then I would replace it with another. You can also do the same routine with the new one as this will make it really grow well.
