QuestionGood afternoon,
I have a four year old climber that was as high as 11 feet tall until the horrible cold snap we had in April! We thought it bounced back as it has great new growth and is climbing like crazy. However, all of the buds on it only open partially and some don't open at all. It is planted with two teas and one miniature--all doing well. Another climber and a standard rose are planted in the same area and they are doing beautifully also. I hate to lose this giant! The roses are all planted on the east/southeast side of the house and get many hours of sun. I also have always used Miracle Gro for roses. I think we are zone 5 (Chicago is closest).
AnswerFrom your description, it sounds like the buds were frozen by the cold snap. Some roses are more prone to cold than others and this could be one of them. To make sure it is the cold and not a bug, take a piece of paper and hit the buds over it to see if there is any tiny black insects. Next take a few buds off and look for a tiny fly like insect at the base. There will be a tiny hole there if it is a midge. Should you find nothing, them it was just the cold that killed the buds. All that will do is simply delay the flowering for about another three weeks later. Hope this helps.
