pesticide damage to roses

Question
zone 9 (near San Jose, CA) A few of my roses are not leafing out - just have these stubbly green fringes instead of leaves.  I think there might have been Round-UP residue in the sprayer when I applied a home-made deer repellent and that now some of my rose bushes are damaged.  How do I fix them? Shall I prune down to the crown? Please help!!!

Answer
RoundUp will damage but when diluted won't kill the rose bush. I am assuming it isn't the deer repellent that is causing it. From your description it does sound like RoundUp damage. A rose can put out three sets of leaves from a bud eye so the next set may be normal. However if you want to prune them back don't go too low as the canes will be okay it is just the leaves that are damaged. I would hose the roses down well making sure the soil around the bush is well soaked also. Roses usually outgrow the damage caused by a herbicide if it wasn't too severe and I think you will find that is what your roses will do. Hope this helps.
