QuestionI've got several rose bushes in my yard, all are growing wonderfully (I live in Northern VA) except this one bush. It was budding at the beginning of spring however in the last few days it has dried up and is just dying. No idea why, no disease signs, etc. Any suggestions? Is it just that particular rose bushes time to go? Thanks!
AnswerThe canes of a rose bush do contain a lot of moisture and it takes some time before they dry out. When a rose has died over the winter, it will still send out new growth using the moisture still in the canes. But then the rose because it is dead, isn't taking up any water or nutrients and the false growth then dies. Your rose didn't make it over the winter which is not unusual but not explainable, for a rose to do it. This weird weather we are having is going to cause a lot of what you have experienced. You might try cutting the rose way back as it may have some green canes near the base. A rose will come back from only a couple of inches and do well. Hope this helps.
