plant bare root roses

Question
Dear Henry,

I moved a big rose last weekend to a sunny spot in my back yard. It was in the corner of the house for many years, and it did't bloom last year. I thought it was lack of sun. When I dig it out, I didn't see too many tiny roots, but three or four thick roots which was hard to dig them out without chop them off. (probably I could but it would wore me out). I added some rooting hormone (since there are only four big old, thick, broken roots, I am afraid they won't work at once) around and together with some rose foods when I covered it with new garden soil. I watered it well. Then I found out I forgot the bone meal.

I ordered four roses on internet from jackson&perkins. They will come this week. I already tilled the spot and added some peat moss, and compose. I want to get your advice before I plant them, so I won't make any mistakes like i did for my old rose. I need your help to have a guaranteed sucess!

Thanks
Lena

Answer
Lena, it sounds to me like you have everything under control.  The Compost is a terrific thing to be able to add.  I think you did forget the bone meal last time, too, didn't you?  Try to get that in -- but don't disturb the fragile roots while doing that.  Just don't overwater.  And make sure you spray for blackspot BEFORE it starts showint up on the leaves this summer.  Roses are heavy feeders but you also don't want to over-do it; follow the directions carefully.

I'm not sure the Rooting Hormone was necessary but if you are in a sunny spot, Lena, it sounds to me like you are in very good shape with these.  Sounds exciting!
