-----Question-----
I have had rose bushes growing in my Arizona back yard(s) for 40 years now. I moved to my location in Buckeye AZ and I am having a horrible time with the webs forming over the leaves of my rose bushes. I use a spray that is recommended to get rid of them, but it doesn't really help. By the time tne new leaves come up, so do the webs. What am I doing wrong. Thank you for your help.
-----Answer-----
Web worms are easy to kill but VERY difficult to get at to kill them. There are two things you can do. One is apply an insecticide late in the day as they feed at night. Orothene is a good one because it will penetrate the webs but be careful is is a strong one. Use Orothene as soon as you can see any signs of the insects. Don't forget that the adults are in the soil around the roses. To activate make them to come closer to the surface or even kill them, mix 1/4 cup dry detergent with 1 gallon of water plus a teaspoon of dish detergent as a sticker when applied. The soak all around the base of the roses. The spray the adults with Orothene. This routine should knock them back and at least get them under control. Hope this helps.
AnswerOrothene is a Bayer product that is made especially for certain types of insects so it won't burn the rose leaves. If you are concerned about the detergent then you can use a liquid one as most of them are nearly the same where the dry detergent, if you believe their advertising, could be different from one another. Just try it on a small patch and see what happens. It is just a mild watered down chemical.
