QuestionI have about 90 young rose plants that I am growing from seeds. I have pinched off the top leaves to allow the lower ones to grow, and have transplanted them into larger pots. What can I expect now. How soon do they get to look like roses, and do they bloom the 1st year? Thanks, denise
AnswerThe strongest vigour of a rose comes mainly from the top growth. Cutting back too soon can weaken the plant. You can always make the bottom branch out later when the seedlings are a couple of years. Some roses do make a tall, lanky shape naturally.
Because they are seedlings, some will be species roses and will bloom the first year others make take a couple of years because they bloom on last years wood. That's the interesting part of growing rose seeds as you never know what you are going to get. Roses do have bloodlines like humans so you may get a beautiful new rose.
