QuestionWe are trying to plant a few nice roses in our yard for a house we purchased over a year ago. I noticed you mentioned this one rose a few times. Would you give me the pros and cons? We live in Westchester County (I dont know the "zone").
Answer"Madame Isaac Pereire" belongs to the group known as Bourbon Roses, found in the Isle of Bourbon. It has large, bright, deep pink blooms, heavily quartered and strongly fragrant -- much stronger than modern Tea roses.
There are generally two flushes of blooms, the first in June and again in late summer around the 1st of September. It does not demand straight, full sunlight needed for growing most Tea Roses, and it takes brutal winters without complaint, although we lose a cane every now and then during a bad year.
An excellent photo, as well as a link for ordering, is available at The Uncommon Rose (uncommonrose.biz/r/mmeisaacpereire.html). You can also pick up specimens in person from the charming Viette Sisters Garden Stand on Northern Boulevard (25A) on Long Island, in Old Westbury. You should call them first to make sure they have stock; they will order for you but they will not ship as they are quite elderly and do everything, Roses included, the old fashioned way.
